Handmade birchbark card by Frances of Creative Muskoka Cards.

Between March and December 2020, Frances Mae Balodis mailed over 1,000 handwritten cards from the Utterson post office to help people feel less isolated during the pandemic. She still sends about 30 cards a week, many with handwritten letters inside, focusing on individuals in retirement or assisted care homes and veterans. She doesn’t necessarily know the person she writes to – she simply hopes her cards lift their spirits as much as sending them lifts hers. Her whimsical birchbark cards are bound to bring a smile for sender and receiver — and a reminder that Muskoka is always home in our hearts.
